[WEEK 04: Exercise] Tracing

This week, Mr Hafiz drilled us with the path tool again. This time mainly, playing with shadows of photos. We had to replace the shadow of a pear with the shadow of a skull!

We firstly had to retrace the image of a pear by Chiaroscuro as provided by Mr. Hafiz, as how we were taught to back in the second week of class.
And replace the shadows with this skull image provided by Mr. Hafiz as well. '
After much time playing with the pen tool, pathfinder, tracing and whatnot, I'd come up with a pink skullpear!

We were introduced to another photograph by Chiaroscuro, of two men. Mr. Hafiz had shown us the way he traced the man on the right, hence we were later asked to trace one on our own.
I wanted to go for that typical vector-art poster, so here's how I'd traced out mine!
Was pretty satisfied with the day's exercise, honestly!
Here's one where Mr. Hafiz asked for us to trace our own photo:

[WEEK 03: Exercise] Pathfinder on fruits

So we were taught how to vectorize, add shadows on, slice, and change the colours of vectored fruits! Here's what Mr. Hafiz had taught us in class!

Along with something I tried out myself, on a pitaya (dragonfruit).

More to come in the next post!

[WEEK 03: Exercise] Pathfinder

So this week, we had to initially outline the image of a goat and then toyed around with the goat using the pathfinder. So I came up with these..

Goata practice more to wing it. Sigh

[WEEK 03: Chop Chop] Initial Sketches

Boy oh boy did I have a hard time deciding which to do on, after avidly deciding the theme I'd choose in order to comprehend to the given word of the week. I settled down with time, as the phrase 'chop chop' is commonly used (with an additional exclamation mark at the end to give a stern feel to the pronunciation and intonation) to remind a person that time is running out.

Went on with just a rough sketch of a pocket-watch, the subject I decided to use amongst all the research I did on clocks and watches
The final sketch I decided to use! Lineart to be posted in the next post!

[WEEK 02: Hide & Reveal] Re-outlining

Finally managed to complete the outline of this intricate complicating design!
Though as any other logical sane person would be thinking right after they set eyes on this design above, there's definitely one particular question that would pop up in their heads: can you actually cut this, zue?

Mr. Hafiz asked me to simplify this, therefore I shall, and I would definitely update this particular post once I've managed to simplify it (unless I actually manage to cut this out without facing any difficulties). Hang on to this post! Will update soon.

[WEEK 02: Hide & Reveal] Back To The Drawing Board!

Ah, well I presented my sketches and the final outline I'd printed out, over to Mr. Ernesto. He prefers one other sketch I had taken out from another idea, which was something along the lines of the traditional Wayang Kulit (yes, straight and flat out 'hide & reveal' essence right there). He gazed upon the image below, and asked which I'd preferred to work on more. I mentioned the magic theme, but he definitely seemed more definite on the wayang kulit theme. I do agree though, despite having to precisely cut-out this intricate - but rather very direct; design, it definitely wins as just the image itself with no typography directly translates the cultural procedure of the show; for the penglipur lara to hide, and for the story to be presented & portrayed (reveal) by these amazing hand-carved characters.

The particular sketch above is one that I had done of. The fellow here, is Bima.
I was asked by Mr. Ernesto to work on changing the design of Bima's headgear, by using traditional indian henna designs, hence the reason why I titled this post as such. Time to research, resketch, retrace and repost!

[WEEK 02: Hide & Reveal] Outline

The outlining begins! By applying the basic methods of the pen tool, I finally managed to outline the silhouette of the hand pulling the words 'hide and reveal' out on Adobe Illustrator, as tutored by Mr. Hafiz. The result is as shown below!

Quite an achievement I suppose, for one who has absolutely no clue as to how to use the pen tool initially. I wonder if Mr. Ernesto would approve of this design, though? Will have the answer in the next post.

[WEEK 02: Hide & Reveal] Idea Sketches

Hello! It just so happens that the day my head decided to throb so bad, is on the same day we were given this assignment to work on. Ah, so yes, for the week, we were assigned to interpret the words "Hide & Reveal" into something visual, and come up with a sketch that we'd eventually use to make a paper cut-out.

I'd come up with a few ideas in relation to some intricate methods of cut-outs, hence the ideas of doily and vines; but I definitely wouldn't have as much time to brainstorm on them, hence the decision of making a simple design in relation to the theme: magic. I had the idea of the design, using top-hats and hands (presto magic!) but had no composition ideas to them. When asked by Mr. Hafiz and given suggestions, I settled down with the idea of a hand pulling out the words "Hide & Reveal". As simple as that, I suppose.

Initial hand sketches, trying to find the right silhouette positions. Sigh didn't work out well.

Thanks to Aina for suggesting me to find silhouette hand images, I settled down with this hand composition!

.. Along with my final composition.
Outline's in the next post!
